Joseph Dale was a part of a group of 3 young men who set about William Wood who was walking home from market in Manchester. They beat him to death with stones on the side of the road, and took his money and ran off.
Dale was apprehended in Liverpool, trying to sign on to a ship. Of the other two, Taylor was apprehended, but committed suicide in Jail, and Pratt was not caught. Due to an issue on a point of law, the sentence for Dale was postponed until the next assizes,(1824) when sentence was confirmed. His body was handed over for dissection after the execution
